Non Competitive Walking Events Encouraging Fun,
Fitness and Friendship:
If you like to do 5km or 10km walks in the
Greater Victoria area, you have come to the right place, don't walk
alone, walk with us.
If you enjoy walking with like-minded folks, mostly
on weekends, you can see the schedule of our monthly regularly scheduled walks

If the event schedule isn't right for you, we offer
a number of walks, known as Year Round Events (YRE's), that you can do

History of Victoria 'Y'
Volkssport Club:
Victoria 'Y'
Volkssport Club began in 1989 and is one of 10 clubs in BC that are
members of the Volkssport Association of BC (VABC).
It was started by two members from the Vic
Y's Men's Club. This club was part of an international organization of
Service Clubs to the YMCA organization around the world. It supported
the Y's Camp Thunderbird located in Sooke through various fund raising
ventures and on site work parties.

The original name of "Victoria Y's Men
Volkssport Club" was changed to "Victoria 'Y' Volkssport
Club" in 1991.
The club's logo, a walker, was patterned after a Volkssporter in
Seattle, Hans Leistina. Hans is from Austria and was an active member of
a Volkssport Club in Seattle at the time.
The club newsletter, "The Walkie Talkie"
was started in 1990 and is published quarterly.

What is
Volkssporting?:
FUN - FITNESS - FRIENDSHIP.... and
FOOD!
Volkssport literally means "a sport of the people". The Canadian
Volkssport Federation/La Federation Canadienne Volkssport (CVF/FCV)
consists of non-profit walking clubs. It was formed in 1987 and has
activities in all provinces and territories across Canada. Our walks are
mostly 5km or 10km non-competitive events, held all year round and
follow planned trails that are safe and scenic. The Individual
Achievement Awards Program is based on Distance covered and/or Events
completed. Volkssport is international and can be enjoyed in as many as
40 countries.
FUN: Enjoy walking with others and
experience the fun of exploring new areas as a group. As many walks are
suitable for strollers it is a great way for families to exercise
together. And don't forget the family pooch - dogs are welcome so long
as they are on a leash and the owner must clean up after them.

"All walkers walk at their own pace." |
- Scheduled Walks: - We meet at
various locations and walk as a group. Directions and a map are
supplied.
- Year Round Events: - These are self
registering walks at various locations that allow you to discover many
scenic areas that can be enjoyed on your own throughout the year.
FITNESS: Walking is a gentle
exercise. Medical science tells us that walking is an excellent way to
get off that couch, out into the fresh air and get your body moving. All
Volkssport walks are rated according to difficulty, to appeal to all
levels of fitness and all ages. Although anyone can participate,
children 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult
during the course of the event.
FRIENDSHIP: Walking with a group is a good way to meet new people who
also enjoy the sport of walking. A great opportunity to make new
friends.
FOOD: A most important part of
Volkssport. There are various socials during the year that help you get
to know your walking companions. Also, lunch at a restaurant near the
finish of the walk is always fun.
